- Cheick Kongo claims he is the top heavyweight in The UFC, and he wants to prove it by earning a title shot at UFC 99.
Kongo takes on Cain Velasquez – the hugely rated Cain Velasquez – in Germany, knowing victory could well book him a shot at the winner of Frank Mir and Brock Lesnar.
The French Sensation is one of a gathering group of heavyweight fighters attempting to stick their neck above the parapet as the next title challenger, with the likes of Junior Dos Santos, Shane Carwin and Velasquez all tipped for future greatness.
Kongo (24-4-1), who has previously beaten Mirko Cro Cop but lost to Heath Herring, is adamant he is the top dog, and he has taken Saturday’s fight against the dangerous Velasquez on short notice in order to prove it.
“It’s now or never. I’m the top fighter in The UFC right now,” Kongo insisted in the build-up to the fight.
“One day I was going to have to meet Velasquez. So I said ‘ok, let’s take the fight now and see what happens.’
“I just know he’s a good wrestler, a really really really good wrestler. Just like stand-up is an education in France, wrestling is education in USA.
“People have weaknesses. I have some, but I work so hard to keep them undercover. If my opponent works on my weakness, I make sure I have a solution.
“If he beats me he can say ‘yeah I beat him so I’m famous’. He can, but it’s going to be a war.
“There’s no mercy here. He’s not my friend, not my family member, I don’t care. He’s my enemy.
“After the fight maybe we can train together, but right now he’s my enemy.”
